Racing and Wagering Western Australia is legally required to know who its customers are. This page explains the identity checks we carry out, why we sometimes ask about the source of your funds, and what happens if we cannot verify you. These checks protect you and help keep gambling free of crime.
1. Why we verify
As a licensed Australian wagering operator we must comply with the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) and the rules made under it, with our Western Australian licence conditions, and with laws requiring us to confirm that every customer is 18 or over. Verification is mandatory — it is not optional and it is not a reflection on you personally.
2. Identity verification (KYC)
Before you can withdraw — and in many cases before you can bet — we must confirm your full name, date of birth and residential address ("Know Your Customer", or KYC). We usually do this electronically the moment you register, by checking the details you give us against independent data sources.
If an electronic check cannot confirm your identity, we will ask you to supply documents. We may restrict deposits, betting or withdrawals until verification is complete.
3. Documents we may request
Depending on the situation we may ask for one or more of:
- A current Australian driver licence, passport or proof-of-age card.
- A recent document confirming your residential address (for example a utility bill or bank statement).
- Confirmation that a payment method is held in your own name.
Please make sure documents are clear, current and in your legal name. Submitting another person's documents, or altered documents, is an offence and will result in account closure.
4. Ongoing monitoring
The law requires us to monitor accounts on an ongoing basis. We may re-verify your identity, refresh your details, or ask follow-up questions at any time during your relationship with us — not only when you join.
5. Source of funds & source of wealth
In some circumstances — for example, larger or unusual transactions, or where our monitoring flags a risk — we are required to ask about the source of your funds (where the money you are betting with came from) and, occasionally, your source of wealth. We may ask for supporting evidence such as payslips, bank statements or other records.
We understand these requests can feel intrusive. They are a legal obligation, the information is handled confidentially under our Privacy Policy, and providing it promptly is the fastest way to keep your account and withdrawals running smoothly.
6. Reporting obligations
We are required to report certain matters to the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), including some transactions and any activity we are obliged to report. By law we cannot tell you whether a report has been made about your account ("tipping off" is prohibited).
7. If we cannot verify you
If we are unable to verify your identity, or you do not provide information we are legally required to obtain, we may suspend or close your account and withhold withdrawals until our obligations are met. Where an account is closed, any verified balance lawfully due to you will be returned to a payment method in your name — see Account Closure & Withdrawals.
8. How we handle your data
All identity and source-of-funds information is collected, used, stored and disclosed in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Australian Privacy Principles and our Privacy Policy. We retain these records for as long as the law requires and then securely destroy or de-identify them.
